Developing Flourishing, Compassionate Yumin Champions who are rooted to Singapore

The Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) curriculum in Yumin Primary incorporates the school’s PosED curriculum and is enacted via a three-phase approach - Teaching, Reinforcement and Application. Our programme under the Reinforcement phase is our Values in Action Project AC3E.

Project AC3E is a structured school-wide Project-Based Learning programme designed to help students apply their knowledge and skills to real-life situations through a values-based learning process. It incorporates Values in Action (VIA) and collaborative learning, harnesses students’ sense of ownership, and encourages students to initiate purposeful projects that will make a difference to others.

The thinking protocol, based on the Design Thinking framework with four phases of Design for Change, requires students to Feel out a problem, Imagine possible solutions, Do to make changes and finally, Share the story. This FIDS process enables students to go through in-depth inquiry, engage in asking questions, source for information, utilise relevant resources and develop answers to meet the needs of the beneficiaries for whom their project was intended. In so doing, problem solving skills, critical and creative thinking as well as digital literacy are explicitly taught and assessed.

Through the projects, students are engaged in authentic situations where they would present and interact with their fellow school mates or people beyond the school community. The reflective process that students take has also helped them to critique and evaluate their learning as well as ascertain how they have value-added or impacted the beneficiaries of their choice. More importantly, the PBL approach provided students with the opportunity to make a difference to the community while instilling in them, sound values, good character and citizenry. We hope that the learning gained by the students is translated into better self-management, and enables them to influence their peers positively.

We hope that after their six-year journey with us, our students will:

i)         develop strategies which will enable them to take a proactive approach in dealing with issues which may confront them in their lives;

ii)       lead lives that have more positive emotion, more achievement and more meaning and purpose; and

iii)      have confidence in themselves, to look to the future with optimism and to be successful.
