Teaching Approach: Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract
The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (C-P-A) approach is an essential approach in the The Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (C-P-A) approach is a key strategy in developing mastery of Mathematics. It builds progressively on students’ existing understanding by moving from hands-on learning to visual representation, and finally to abstract mathematical concepts.
Students first explore ideas using concrete materials, before representing their understanding through diagrams and models. These experiences strengthen conceptual understanding and allow pupils to apply mathematical concepts meaningfully in authentic contexts.
BEST Approach
The BEST approach is a metacognitive strategy that guides students in solving word problems. It encourages pupils to develop a consistent thinking process whenever they encounter story sums.
Through the use of annotation, diagrams, and models, students learn to analyse questions more effectively. The NTUC strategy further supports them in organising their thinking and evaluating their answers, helping them become more confident and independent problem solvers.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND PROGRAMMES
The Mathematics Department provides authentic learning experiences both during daily lessons and through special programmes during Discovery Week as well as Discovery Math. These programmes allow pupils to connect mathematical concepts with real-world applications.
Primary 1 - Tangrams
After learning about shapes in Semester 1, Primary 1 pupils explore tangrams through hands-on activities. Using the shapes they have learnt, students create different figures and patterns. This activity reinforces their understanding of shapes while encouraging creativity and spatial thinking.
Primary 2 - Multiplication Challenge
The Multiplication Challenge aims to reinforce students’ mastery of the times tables through engaging and creative activities.
Students listen to multiplication songs and are also encouraged to create and record their own musical pieces to help remember the multiplication facts. They are provided with multiplication cards which they can use independently, with friends in school, or with family members at home. Pupils also share the creative ways they use these cards, allowing others to try out these strategies for fun and meaningful practice.
Primary 2 - Shopping Experience
After learning about Money, Primary 2 pupils participate in a hands-on shopping experience. With a given budget, students select items they would like to “purchase” and practise making decisions, budgeting, and calculating costs. This activity helps them apply their learning to real-life situations.
Primary 3 - Measuring in the Real World
Primary 3 pupils gain authentic experiences using weighing scales to measure different items. Through these activities, they learn to connect what they have learnt in Mathematics with real-world situations, strengthening both understanding and application.
Discovery Math in Yumin
Discovery Math @ Yumin aims to spark curiosity and interest in Mathematics through engaging activities conducted during morning assembly talks and recess programmes.
These activities encourage pupils to develop a growth mindset, curiosity, and creative thinking when approaching mathematical ideas. Different themes are explored each year. For example, pupils have discovered the concept of π (pi) through hands-on activities during recess programmes. They also challenge themselves with various math puzzles and brain teasers that promote logical thinking and perseverance.
Competitions and Enrichment Opportunities
Excellence 2000 (E2K) Mathematics Programme
The Excellence 2000 (E2K) Mathematics Programme is an enrichment programme designed for Primary 4 and Primary 5 pupils who demonstrate strong interest and ability in Mathematics.
Through an inquiry-based approach, pupils deepen their conceptual understanding while developing mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. The programme encourages students to explore mathematical ideas beyond the classroom and to think critically and creatively.
GEP Project
Yumin also provides opportunities for pupils to participate in external competitions such as the GEP Project. In this competition, students explore mathematical ideas creatively by designing posters on selected mathematical topics and developing games that incorporate mathematical concepts.
Through this process, pupils apply the knowledge they have learnt in class while exploring areas of Mathematics that spark their curiosity. The project encourages creativity, critical thinking, and deeper appreciation of mathematical ideas.
Math Olympiad
The school also conducts Math Olympiad training for Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils who show strong interest and aptitude in Mathematics. Selected pupils are given opportunities to represent the school in various competitions.
Through these training sessions, students are exposed to challenging non-routine problems that develop their logical reasoning, problem-solving strategies, and perseverance in tackling complex mathematical tasks.
