KEY PROGRAMMES & LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Mother Tongue Fortnight (MTF) & Chinese Language Camp
With the objective of ‘Active Learners, Proficient Users’ in mind, the Chinese Department create more opportunities for students to be exposed to Chinese culture and values, and also to enhance their learning of the Chinese Language (CL).
During the MT Fortnight & Language Camp, the activities are multi-disciplinary integrating subjects such as Physical Education, Art, Music, Drama, and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). The learning of CL is thus made more fun, engaging and effective through multi-disciplinary settings. These activities arouse students’ interest in learning Chinese culture and better equip them with the varied use of the language in different contexts. Students learn to be more confident, adaptable, innovative, and resilient.
Reading and Writing Programme
Yumin Primary School actively promotes reading and writing activities, aiming to cultivate good reading habits in students from a young age and inspire a love for both reading and writing. The school organises activities such as World Book Day and promotes the reading application Joyreader, encouraging students to enjoy reading both in school and at home. In addition, the school compiles outstanding student compositions each year into an anthology titled Yu Miao, which showcases students’ learning achievements and helps create a strong culture of reading and writing.
On World Book Day, the school creates a vibrant reading atmosphere by engaging students in in-class reading activities. The selected books are from the locally published Xin Xin Dao series, recommended by Singapore’s Ministry of Education. These books are appropriate for students’ age levels and reading abilities, helping them read quality materials at the right stage and fostering their interest in Chinese reading. Furthermore, the Joyreader application provides a wide range of e-books for different age groups and grade levels. The app includes features such as a built-in dictionary and a read-aloud function, which help students understand vocabulary and improve their language skills. With access to these resources at home, students can continue reading and learning with ease and enjoyment. Through the combined efforts of the school and families, we hope to instill strong reading habits in students from an early age, making reading a natural part of their daily lives.
At the same time, the school carefully selects outstanding student compositions each year and compiles them into a publication titled Yu Miao, which is distributed free of charge to students from Primary 3 to Primary 6. The anthology features students’ best works, showcasing their learning achievements while providing valuable examples for other students to learn from. To further enhance students’ writing skills, teachers also highlight exemplary “DFA” sentences in the compositions (Dialogue, Feeling, and Action). By drawing attention to these elements, students are guided to incorporate dialogue, emotions, and actions into their writing, making their compositions more vivid and expressive.
